… I have hated having to go to a gallery and being forced to read some didactic descriptions on the walls. But, in the end, I find that I myself am one of these insufferable text-based artists too. So I like to at least offer some comfortable chairs for anyone who has to suffer through my work. Maybe an alcoholic beverage or a Twinkie.

Baseball humbled me. I made my slick, cynical predictions… and what happens? Magic. I was in a bar for St. Louis’s epic victory in Game 6 of the World Series, and all around me grown men and women slapped their heads (slapped their heads!) with each dramatic turn of the most amazing game I have ever seen. Great sport can be like great art—transcendent.
Jess Walter, HOBART picks the 2011 Season, revisitedas much as we love finding beautiful pictures of Tasmania and info on mixers via the tumblr search tag for “Hobart,” this is pretty cool, too:
Just found out that Hobart, one of my favorite lit mags ever, accepted a short story of mine.
Dancing, squealing and singing ensued. YEAH!

Ann Arbor, what-what?!
(also: these are pretty great. I think I especially love that middle on, in part just cause I love the painting dimension so much, but also that road, those beautiful old cars, the look over his shoulder as he’s getting passed… (and, sure, the movie, too, of course))

Yesterday The Daily Forlorn passed a huge milestone in number of followers, and while I don’t want to go into really specific numbers, I do want to extend a thank you to the tens of thousands of new people following this site.
To give back a bit, I wrote a post about what I use to make my work, in the hopes that this is useful to people. I posted it on my blog, but I wanted to post it here too. So… here’s that:

Cover of the Nov. 19, 2012 issue. Click-through for the story behind “Rhapsody in Blue,” the cover after Obama’s reelection from artist Mark Ulriksen: http://nyr.kr/ZfzUIQ
I actually kinda really dislike this us v. them, red v. blue, “my team won” sports analogy. Just me?

I was marveling at that last image, with the burning car and antlers (two classic hobart images!), for quite a while, before I even realized… 253 what-what!!
