Jack Daniel’s is a Tennessee whiskey, which is differentiated from bourbon only in that it is made in Tennessee and filtered through maple charcoal before aging,

My understanding was always that it is the second half of that that matters, and where it is made doesn’t especially matter, but that maple charcoal negates the couple-of-sentence-later claim that ”Jack Daniel’s meets the criteria to be called bourbon.” i.e “From the point of a view of a craft distiller, the charcoal filtering is a bit of a cheat, since it makes the whiskey taste somewhat more mature than it is…”
