And what was I reading in that end-of-the-year stretch while Jackson was crossing over from “baby” to “toddler,” as he was moving from a life measured only in months to a life that can now be measured in years? On January 5th, on the day that Jackson turned one year old, I was wandering somewhere in the middle of Elizabeth Ellen’s sweeping short story collection Fast Machine, a sort of “box-set” of the author’s work comprising more than ninety short stories.
